Tiger Balm – proven remedy from traditional medicine

Tiger Balm was developed about 150 years ago by a Chinese herbalist and has since become an integral part of traditional Asian medicine. Originally intended to relieve muscle pain, it is now used for a variety of ailments.

Origin and history

The recipe dates back to the herbalist Aw Chu Kin, who developed an effective ointment for muscle and joint pain at the end of the 19th century. His sons later made the product known worldwide under the name "Tiger Balsam".

Why does Tiger Balm work?

The effect is based on a combination of essential oils:

  • Camphor has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

  • Menthol provides a cooling effect and reduces swelling.

  • Clove oil has mildly numbing properties.

  • Other oils such as eucalyptus, mint and cinnamon enhance the effect.

The different varieties

There are two versions: white and red Tiger Balm.
Red Tiger Balm is particularly popular among athletes. It promotes blood circulation, relaxes muscles, and helps with muscle and joint pain as well as inflammation such as tension or tendon irritation.
